Oregon-Cal preview

Both teams are 3-1, though there is a vast difference in the lone ‘L’ on each team’s ledger. Cal’s is, by all means, an acceptable one, a 30-20 loss to No. 5 USC in a game that the Bears had tied heading into the fourth quarter. They put on an admirable performance against arguably the best team in the conference.

And then there’s Oregon.

The Ducks’ 37-35 loss to Arizona State on Saturday evening was the biggest upset of the young Pac-12 season. Oregon was held to less than 40 points for the first time all season, Royce Freeman was held to less than 100 yards rushing for the first time all season. The Ducks allowed more points than they had all season. There was little positive to take from the loss, which begs the question: How will either team respond?

Both losses marked the first for Cal coach Justin Wilcox and Oregon coach Willie Taggart. Both find themselves in new, unfamiliar positions.

It’s an intriguing matchup. Oregon, with the Pac-12’s all-time touchdown leader in Freeman in the backfield, is a run-first offense, and Cal proved its mettle in defending that very style last weekend against USC when it limited the Trojans to just 3.5 yards per carry.

The Bears are quite the opposite, taking to the air more often than not, though if that is such a good thing is yet to be seen as quarterback Ross Bowers has thrown two more interceptions (8) than touchdowns (6). Despite Bowers’ struggles — he played three solid quarters against USC, though collapsed in the fourth — Wilcox is sticking with him.

“Ross Bowers is the quarterback,” he told reporters after Saturday’s loss, “and he’s going to learn and grow from this.”

Oregon’s secondary is not the ball-hawking bunch that USC’s is, allowing Arizona State’s Manny Wilkins to throw for 347 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. The previous week, the Ducks did, however, limit much-hyped Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen to a woeful 9 of 24 passing for 64 yards and an interception in a convincing 49-13 win.

How Cal will recover is a mystery.

How Oregon will recover is a mystery.

At 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Pac-12 will find out.
