Oregon State-Washington keys to the game

Limit the mistakes

Washington loves to take advantage of opponents’ weaknesses in the special teams phase of the game. It starts with punt coverage, against one of the nation’s most dangerous return men in Dante Pettis. Containing Pettis, or kicking away from him, can save the Beavers from a big blow in the special teams area of the game. Ball control will also be key in keeping this a close game, as Washington can score early and often.

Stop the run

It sounds simple, but consider this: When Washington has a player rush for 100 or more yards in a game, the Huskies are 208-65-3 all time. Since 1990, the Huskies have rushed for 200 yards or more in a game 110 times, and have won 93 of those contests. Oregon State is T-106th in the nation against the run, giving up 198.8 yards per game. They must improve drastically on that number, or it will be a ground-powered rout.

Play well consistently

Oregon State has gotten off to a rough start with a 1-3 record, but has 8 more games to put things together. Two-thirds of the season remains for the Beavers to figure things out, starting with this contest against a difficult opponent in Washington. They’ll have the home crowd on their side in a tough matchup, and even if things don’t turn out in their favor, consistent play can go a long way toward turning the season around.
