Orlando Brown rehabbing draft stock; softball wins extra-inning thriller

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of our Oklahoma DieHards morning roundup, where we take you through all the biggest headlines around Oklahoma athletics.

Moving up

Former Oklahoma offensive tackle Orlando Brown is hopefully rehabilitating his NFL draft stock a little bit. The unanimous All-American is projected to go No. 16 to the Baltimore Ravens in NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks’ mock draft.

Brooks believes that the Ravens won’t hold Brown’s poor combine performance against him to the same extent others may. Luckily, he performed much better at Oklahoma’s pro day, as well. It just takes one team to take a chance on him early.

Other headlines:

  • DieHards Oklahoma writer John Shinn broke down whether Oklahoma playing in the Big 12 inhibits its defensive development.
  • SB Nation’s Dan Kadar projects that former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will go No. 3 overall to the New York Jets. The franchise traded several picks Saturday to move up from No. 6 to No. 3 in the draft.

Softball pulls away

Oklahoma softball pulled off a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Cal State Northridge in 11 innings on Monday. The win gave the Sooners a 16-game winning streak and stretched their road winning streak to 33 games dating back to 2016.

Paige Parker picked up the win after pitching seven hitless innings, improving to 14-1. Designated player Jocelyn Alo scored both of the Sooners’ runs. Oklahoma mustered just 3 total hits on the day, but it was enough to move past CSUN.

Other headlines:

  • Men’s gymnastics moved back to No. 1 in the nation after beating Illinois last weekend. The Sooners rank No. 1 nationally in pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar.
  • Women’s gymnasts won both Big 12 weekly awards in the final week of the season. Gymnast Maggie Nichols and event specialist Natalie Brown won honors.
  • Baseball will visit Wichita State at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday. The Shockers are ranked No. 26.
