Penn State-Illinois basketball preview
Both Penn State and Illinois enter this game unranked. However, Penn State has had a much better season than Illinois, so far.
Entering play on Sunday, the Nittany Lions hold an overall record of 17-9, and have gone 7-6 in Big Ten play. After losing back-to-back games to Minnesota and Northwestern in mid-January, Penn State has won four of its last five games. This stretch began with an upset win on the road over Ohio State on Jan. 26, which ended on a buzzer beater from Penn State’s Tony Carr.
Penn State followed that win with a victory over Rutgers before losing to Michigan State on the road. However, the Nittany Lions bounced back for consecutive wins over Iowa and Maryland.
On the other side, Illinois currently holds an overall record of 12-13. However, Illinois has struggled against Big Ten opponents, as the Fighting Illini has only gone 2-10 in conference play.
Illinois ended a six-game losing streak by defeating Indiana on Jan. 25, and followed up that victory with a win over Rutgers. However, they have since dropped two straight, falling to Ohio State and Wisconsin on Feb. 3 and Thursday, respectively.
Sunday’s game will mark the first and only regular-season meeting between Penn State and Illinois this season.
In its last game, Penn State defeated at home Maryland, 70-74, behind Lamar Stevens’ 25 points. Carr also added 16 points and 6 assists in the win.
Illinois is coming off a 78-69 loss to Wisconsin. In that game, Illinois guard Trent Frazier put forth a strong performance, scoring 32 points, including 7 made 3-point field goals.
The last time these two clubs played was on Feb. 11 of last season, which ended in favor of Penn State, 83-70. The Big Ten foes faced off another time last season, but it also ended with a Penn State victory, as the Nittany Lions won, 71-67, on Jan. 28.
