Clock officially ticking toward commitment date for 4-star safety Kwantel Raines

Aliquippa (Pa.) High School senior Kwantel Raines is considered the second-best uncommitted Pennsylvania prospect, according to 247Sports 2018 composite rankings. He plans to pick his collegiate destination later this month, announcing intentions Wednesday morning.

Raines, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound playmaker previously expressed plans to commit midway through his final high school campaign. Considered a top-200 overall prospect and the No. 15 safety in composite rankings, he released a list of finalists July 13.

He listed, in no order, Florida, Kentucky, Penn State, Pittsburgh and West Virginia as his top options. Raines added fringe contenders Maryland and South Carolina were also under consideration this summer, stating both schools were “still kind of in the mix”.

Due to his size and range, Raines is a bit of a hybrid defensive prospect. He possesses the athleticism and quickness to contribute at safety, while his length and physicality leave the door open for a future at linebacker.

Raines has been a frequent visitor to Penn State, most recently attending the Nittany Lions’ Sept. 9 game vs. Pitt. James Franklin extended a scholarship offer in his direction on March 30, 2016, when he was a sophomore.

Now, 19 months later, there is concern about whether or not Penn State would have room to add Raines to its 2018 recruiting class. The group features 23 pledges, including a pair of projected safeties. Nittany Lions legacy Isaiah Humphries and 4-star Philadelphia talent Isheem Young are already on board at the position.

Legitimate interest from elite defensive ends Jayson Oweh, Micah Parsons and Tyreke Smith may take precedence, while 4-star offensive tackle Rasheed Walker is another key name to know on the target board. We won’t know where Oweh and Smith are heading until they announce decisions Jan. 4 at the Under Armour All-America Game. There’s no indication Parsons will determine his destination prior to November, so the timing of Raines’ commitment date creates another layer of intrigue.

His proximity to Pitt immediately makes a nearby program an obvious contender. The Panthers lead a jumbled group in the 247Sports crystal ball, carrying 44 percent of experts’ predictions. Florida, Penn State and West Virginia follow behind with 11 percent of projections apiece.

Expect Raines to maximize this final stretch of his recruitment, as final campus visits may determine the outcome. Penn State has one home game before Oct. 30, hosting Michigan on Oct. 21, so that would probably be the target for him if another trip to Happy Valley is in the cards.
