Pitt basketball entered Saturday winless in its 16 ACC games so far this season. To make matters worse, the Panthers were matched up with Virginia, the No. 1 team in the country and owner’s of a suffocating defense.

It wasn’t going to be pretty for Pitt. But maybe nobody expected it to be this bad.

In the first half — 20 full minutes of basketball — of a home game against Virginia, the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s basketball team scored 7 points. Seven. Pitt got more than half (4) of its points from the foul line. The Panthers were 1-for-22 from the field — a 4.5 percent shooting effort. They were 0-for-9 on 2-point field goals.

The loss to Virginia will move Pitt to 8-22 on the season and 0-17 in the ACC. The 2017-18 campaign will mark the third time in four seasons Pitt has missed the NCAA Tournament unless the Panthers can make a miracle run through the ACC Tournament.
