Pitt-Louisville basketball preview
A couple of teams on the opposite end of the ACC standings meet in Pennsylvania on Sunday as Pittsburgh hosts Louisville in hopes of breaking a woeful run of games.
The Cardinals are coming off a 77-54 blowout win against Georgia Tech on Thursday to end a three-game skid. Jordan Nwora scored 16 points, and Anas Mahmoud added 12 points and 7 rebounds in a much-needed win. Louisville’s defense forced the Yellow Jackets into 20 turnovers, while its offense shot 50 percent.
Despite its recent three-game losing streak, Louisville should make the NCAA Tournament, according to projections released on Thursday by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. Lunardi has the Cardinals as an eight seed in the Midwest Region, taking on ninth-seeded Texas A&M.
Louisville has a chance to make a move in the conference standings. It entered the weekend tied for fourth place in the standings with North Carolina but is in sixth place via tiebreaker. Both teams were a half-game behind Duke headed into the weekend. The top 4 teams in the conference clinch a double bye in the ACC Tournament, which begins March 6 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Despite Pitt’s record, the Cardinals can ill afford to take the Panthers for granted because a loss could damage their tournament hopes. If they beat Pitt, though, they have a tremendous chance to improve their tournament odds with games against North Carolina and at Duke following this one.
Meanwhile, Pitt’s struggles in ACC play continue as it remains winless in conference games. The Panthers have not won a regular-season conference game since Feb. 18, 2017, an 80-66 win over Florida State. After an 8-5 nonconference record, they now hold an overall record of 8-17.
On Thursday, Pitt fell 72-48 at No. 16 Clemson. Terrell Brown scored 19 points and was the only Panthers player in double figures; in fact, no other Pitt player scored more than 8 points. It was within 32-22 at halftime before Clemson went on a 24-6 run spanning the first 5 1/2 minutes of the second half to put away the game.
Pitt’s offense has struggled all season. The team has averaged 63.1 points a game, the 10th-worst scoring average in Division I.
In the last meeting between the two teams on Jan. 2, Louisville beat Pitt 77-51 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. In the meeting prior, on Jan. 24, 2017, Louisville went on the road and hammered Pitt 106-51. It was the worst loss for the Panthers since 1906.
