TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — We’re pushing through the early part of the offseason after Alabama’s championship run, and we’re here to answer any questions you have.
The players are locked in on the spring semester while the coaching staff is looking ahead to the 2019 recruiting cycle.
Here’s our question of the day — go here for other Alabama football and recruiting questions and answers.
Who are some lesser-known names who could play bigger roles next season for Alabama football?
We all know the big names who are returning for Alabama football — Raekwon Davis, Mack Wilson, Isaiah Buggs, Terrell Lewis and Christian Miller on defense, as well as Damien Harris and others on offense.
But who are some lesser-known guys who could make impacts? It happens every year: Guys who have sat behind veterans or talented young players throughout their careers finally get a shot to showcase their talents. Here’s a few names to look out for.
- Derek Kief, wide receiver: Kief, a redshirt senior, has been buried on the depth chart during his first four years with the Tide. Heading into his final season, Kief should get an opportunity to compete for playing time and a spot in the rotation with Alabama losing Calvin Ridley, Robert Foster and Cam Sims. Kief has caught 7 passes for 62 yards and 1 touchdown in his career.
- Johnny Dwight, defensive lineman: Dwight could see an increased role with Alabama losing Da’Ron Payne and a lack of depth along the defensive line. Last season, Dwight had 9 tackles as a junior, 3 1/2 for loss, 1 sack and a quarterback hurry.
- Miller Forristall, tight end: Forristall appeared to be heading toward a solid 2017 season before injuring a knee. He should be healthy going forward, which will give Alabama’s offense another pass-catching weapon.
- Shyheim Carter, defensive back: Carter played some throughout his first two seasons, but he was behind Minkah Fitzpatrick or Tony Brown. With both of those guys gone, Carter likely will be the guy at the star defensive position in Alabama’s secondary.
