Recapping Tennessee football’s September to-do list on recruiting trail

Tennessee has the potential of bringing in a top-notch class for the 2018 cycle.

At the beginning of September, I laid out three goals for the Vols to accomplish to keep their strong recruiting going.

Tennessee had a rather quiet month on the recruiting trail. Did it accomplish everything it should have?

1. Keep the class intact

Tennessee pulled this off. The Vols have 23 commitments in the Class of 2018, including many blue-chip prospects.

It is imperative to keep the class mostly together if coach Butch Jones intends to bring his best recruiting class to campus this cycle. Tennessee currently holds the No. 6 class in the country, which is good for best in the SEC,  according to the 247Sports team rankings .

There is still work to be done going forward. Commits Jaycee Horn and Dorian Gerald have official visits scheduled to other SEC schools over the next few months.

Tennessee will have to worry about this down the line, but the Vols have done a good job in September in not losing any commits.

2. Keep pursuing Jerome Carvin

Carvin has been Tennessee’s No. 1 remaining target left on the offensive side of the football. The offensive tackle from Cordova, Tenn., has been impressed with the Vols.

Carvin told SEC Country earlier in September the Vols coaching staff has recruited him the hardest. He said he hears from either Jones or offensive line coach Walt Wells every day.

Carvin did take an unofficial visit to Mississippi State when the Bulldogs played LSU earlier this month.

The Vols must continue their pursuit because Mississippi State continues to loom as a serious threat.

3. Continue pushing for Richard Jibunor

This has fallen off a bit, but it’s not a failure for Tennessee.

Jibunor has turned his attention to Auburn and it seems like he will end up with the Tigers. That’s fine for the Vols, too.

Tennessee will need to figure out its final defensive addition to the class. Will it be an outside linebacker or an edge rusher?

Whoever it’ll be, it likely won’t be Jibunor.
