Report: Dan Mullen lands his first 2019 commitment in linebacker Jammal Abrams

Dan Mullen had a strong close to the 2018 recruiting cycle, landing a number of high profile signees like Emory Jones and Jacob Copeland. And on Saturday, Mullen landed his first commitment with Florida for the 2019 cycle.

Linebacker Jammal Abrams of Birmingham, Ala., became Mullen’s first 2019 commit, as he committed to the Gators, per Blake Alderman of 247Sports. Abrams become the fourth member of the class, joining Ja’Markis Weston, Wardrick Wislon and Trent Whittemore. Weston is the only 4-star commitment in the group, as Abrams is a 3-star prospect.

Abrams is also Florida’s first commitment from outside the state of Florida for the 2019 class. He is listed at 6-foot-3 and 224 pounds. Abrams is the No. 21 player in the state of Alabama and the No. 18 player at his position.

For the 2018 recruiting class, Mullen and company finished with the No. 14 class overall and the No. 4 class in the SEC. Only Georgia, Alabama and Auburn finished with better recruiting classes in the 2018 cycle.

Mullen and the Gators open the 2018 season on Sept. 1. The Gators host Charleston Southern. Mullen replaced Jim McElwain who was fired midway through the 2017 season. At one point under McElwain, Florida had the No. 1 overall recruiting class in the 2019 cycle. Miami now has that distinction, just holding an edge over Georgia.
