LSU has added a nonconference opponent to its 2022 football schedule, and while it may not seem like it, there’s a Tigers connection.
LSU will host New Mexico on Sept. 10, 2022 at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, according to Kevin Kelley of FBSchedules.com.
The schools have never played in football, but here’s the Tigers tie-in, from SEC Country’s Alex Hickey:

LSU will pay New Mexico $1.6 million guaranteed for the game. Kelley reports that LSU was originally scheduled to travel to Arizona State in 2022, but that game got moved to 2026.
New Mexico joins LSU’s SEC West rivals Alabama, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State, as well as Tennessee on the Tigers’ home slate for the 2022 season.
In 2017, the Lobos went 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the Mountain West Conference.
