One year after SEC counterpart Kentucky is scheduled to host Eastern Illinois for a football game, the Mississippi State Bulldogs will do the same.
Mississippi State and Eastern Illinois will play in Starkville on Oct. 2, 2021, according to Kevin Kelley of FBSchedules.com.
Earlier Tuesday, Eastern Illinois announced it would play the Wildcats in Lexington in October of 2020.
For the game at Davis Wade Stadium, Mississippi State will pay Eastern Illinois $500,000. It will be the first time these football programs have played.
Eastern Illinois is an FCS team that plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Panthers went 6-5 overall in the 2017 season including 5-3 in the OVC. They aren’t shying away from the big stage either. Eastern Illinois will also play Arkansas in 2018 in addition to the 2020 matchup with the Wildcats.
The Eastern Illinois game likely completes Mississippi State’s 2021 nonconference schedule. The Bulldogs will play three such games to start the season in September, hosting Louisiana Tech and North Carolina State before traveling to Memphis. The October matchup against Eastern Illinois will help to break up the Bulldogs’ SEC schedule.
Mississippi State began spring practice for the upcoming 2018 season on Tuesday afternoon.
