Report: Oregon WR, CoMo native Alex Ofodile transferring to Missouri

Barry Odom-Missouri-contract

For the second day in a row, Missouri has landed a graduate transfer from the University of Oregon.

After earning a commitment from safety Khalil Olver on Thursday, Barry Odom and the Tigers got some even bigger news on Friday, as it was reported by that Columbia native Alex Ofodile will also be enrolling at Mizzou and eligible to play immediately.

If that name sounds familiar to Missouri fans, it’s not just because Ofodile will be returning to his hometown, where he starred for the Rock Bridge Bruins. Alex’s father A.J. is the newly-named receiver’s coach for Barry Odom, after serving as Odom’s director of recruiting for two seasons. A former Mizzou tight end in the early 90s, Ofodile coached his son at Rock Bridge before taking the job at Missouri.

The younger Ofodile seemed to confirm the news later on when he tweeted the following:

The second-ranked player in the state — behind current Mizzou quarterback Drew Lock — in the class of 2014, Ofodile’s time at Oregon was beset by injuries and coaching changes. Ofodile originally signed to play for Mark Helfrich, only to watch Helfrich get fired following the 2016 season when Willie Taggart took over. However, Taggart lasted just one season in Eugene before leaving this past offseason to take the head job at Florida State. Former Alabama assistant Mario Cristobal was promoted to head coach for the Ducks following Taggart’s departure.

All told, Ofodile will end his Oregon career with just 4 catches for 31 yards — disappointing totals for the former four-star recruit. However, a change of scenery, and the comfort of his hometown, could be exactly what he needs to get his career back on track.

After redshirting in 2014, Ofodile has two seasons of eligibility remaining at Missouri, and figures to have every opportunity to earn early playing time in a Tiger offense that returns most starters, but will be looking to replace the ultra-productive J’Mon Moore. At 6’3, 200 pounds, Ofodile still has the ideal frame to play on the outside that made him so highly regarding coming out of high school.
