That ended up as the final score. This wasn’t pretty for the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers-Ohio State preview

Ohio State and Rutgers don’t have a long history. The Scarlet Knights joined the Big Ten Conference in 2014  and never played the Buckeyes until the two were conference members.

Ohio State has had no trouble beating Rutgers in all three meetings, going 3-0. In 2014, the Buckeyes won 56-17 in Columbus, Ohio. In 2015, Ohio State rolled again, 49-7, on the road. When the two teams met again last year, Ohio State won big at home, 58-0. Ohio State outgained Rutgers 669 to 116 in the 2016 blowout.

The Buckeyes are 3-1 this season, including 1-0 in the Big Ten. They’ve beaten Indiana (49-21), Army (38-7) and UNLV (54-21). But they lost at home to Oklahoma, 31-16, in a nonconference game.

Through four games, Ohio State is averaging 39.2 points while giving up 20 points per game. QB J.T. Barrett leads the offense, completing 76 of 120 passes for 966 yards, 10 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also has 174 rushing yards with 2 scores. Backup Dwayne Haskins is 19-for-27 for 274 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, with most of his action coming in the game against UNLV.

On the ground, freshman J.K. Dobbins has been the biggest star. He leads the Buckeyes with 520 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on only 69 attempts. Dobbins is averaging 7.5 yards per attempt. Mike Weber, who picked up more than 1,000 yards last year, has been battling an injury. He does have 7 carries for 42 yards this season. Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said earlier this week that Weber is cleared and will play against Rutgers.

After Ohio State beat Army in Week 3, Meyer emphasized Weber’s importance to the team.

“He’ll be rewarded once he gets back full speed,” Meyer said. “It’s not that Mike’s a lost soul around here … He’s very critical for us as we continue to move forward in conference play coming up in a few weeks.”

After playing Rutgers, Ohio State continues Big Ten play on Saturday, Oct. 7 at home against Maryland for homecoming.

Rutgers is 1-3 so far this season. The Scarlet Knights have lost to Washington (30-14), Eastern Michigan (16-13) and Nebraska (27-17). Rutgers routed Morgan State, 65-0, in its win.

The Scarlet Knights are led by second-year coach Chris Ash, a former Ohio State assistant.

After four games, Rutgers is averaging 27.3 points per game while giving up 18.3 points per game.

QB Kyle Bolin is 67-for-117 passing for 642 yards, 3 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Gus Edwards has paced the run game. Edwards has 62 carries for 259 yards, scoring twice while averaging 4.2 yards per attempt.

Rutgers has a bye week after Saturday’s home night game against Ohio State. The Scarlet Knights then hit the road for an Oct. 14 road game against Illinois. The Scarlet Knights have struggled in recent years. After going 8-5 in 2014, Rutgers went 4-8 in 2015 and then 2-10 last year. The Scarlet Knights also have only one Big Ten win since the start of the 2015 season.
