Ole Miss struggled mightily on Saturday night, when it fell 66-3 to Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Those struggles didn’t help the Rebels’ standing in the SEC Country Power Poll.
The Rebels came in at No. 13 in the power poll, ahead only of Missouri. It’s the second week in a row that Ole Miss finds itself in the No. 13 spot. There was at least one voter who had Ole Miss ranked last in the poll.
After winning its first two games of the season, albeit against lesser competition, Ole Miss has struggled. The Rebels lost on the road at Cal, a game in which they didn’t score a touchdown in the second half.
Against Alabama, things somehow got worse. Ole Miss mustered only a field goal in the loss. Shea Patterson had his worst game of the season, throwing for 165 yards with 2 interceptions, one of which was a pick-6.
As bad as the Ole Miss offense was, the defense was worse. Alabama ran for 365 yards and totaled 613 yards.
“We just have to find ways to win football games, and it takes all three phases: offense, defense, special teams,” Ole Miss interim coach Matt Luke said after the game.
Things don’t get any easier this week. Ole Miss is on the road again, this time taking on the second-highest-ranked SEC West team, the Auburn Tigers. Patterson and the Rebels will have to play much better because the Auburn defense isn’t all that much worse than the Alabama defense.
The Ole Miss defense will try to slow down Jarrett Stidham and the potent Auburn rushing attack. Auburn has won three in a row since losing to Clemson in its second game of the season.
Kickoff between the Rebels and Tigers is set for 12 p.m. ET. The game can be seen on the SEC Network.
