Alabama senior linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton is sick of not being able to hit sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts during practices.
It’s not anything personal, but all week long he gets to line up on the opposite side when the Crimson Tide’s first-team offense faces the first-team defense, and whenever anyone gets close to the quarterback they have to tap him out.
Quarterbacks wear non-contact jerseys during practices, and that rule is strictly enforced even if they’re running.
“I feel like we could stop him because we can’t tackle him in practice,” Hamilton said. “If we put a hit on him, he’d think twice about keeping the ball then.”
Consequently, if the first-team offense and defense were on opposite sides with a game on the line — with the ball in the red zone in an all-or-nothing situation requiring a touchdown — Hamilton likes his chances. He doesn’t think the offense would score.
“We won’t let that happen,” he said.
Of course, Hurts does not see it that way.
“There are times when they tap me out and I’m really not tackled, so we’ve got a mutual, what’s the word … disrespect,” he said.
With Alabama having outscored its first five opponents 231-43 this season, SEC Country’s Christopher Walsh and Marq Burnett debate which side would win such a showdown on this week’s edition of Sound Off, presented by Zaxby’s. They also look ahead to the game at Texas A&M on Saturday.
The great debate: Which side is playing better, Alabama’s offense or defense?
Here are some timestamps to guide you:
- Marq and Christopher give some final thoughts about last week’s win against Ole Miss. Marq talks about which victory was more impressive to him, Vanderbilt or Ole Miss (:50), and Christopher gives his reasoning why he feels a little differently (1:20).
- Alabama got some good news this week. Senior defensive end Da’Shawn Hand’s knee injury isn’t as severe as initially feared (3:00), but he’s still expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. Marq feels that one player in particular will have a chance to step up in the starting lineup (3:20), while Christopher looks for another to take an important step in his development (4:00) while filling in.
- Alabama’s offense vs. defense, who do you have (5:00)? “That’s tough,” Marq said, before giving a final answer. Christopher agrees that one factor probably would be the difference in such a showdown (6:20).
- Christopher and Marq turn their attention to Texas A&M, and give the Aggies a lot of credit for being 4-1 after the disastrous season opener against UCLA (7:00). Christopher offers one of his keys to the game (8:15), and speculates on whether he thinks it will be close. Marq compares this season’s game to previous matchups with the Aggies, and offers a player to watch (9:15).
