COLUMBIA, S.C. — Dan Werner, one of the newest additions to the South Carolina football coaching staff, has four scholarship quarterbacks to work with during his first season.
Jake Bentley, who’s started the Gamecocks last 20 games, leads the quarterback room, which also includes senior Michael Scarnecchia, redshirt freshman Jay Urich and freshman Dakereon Joyner.

“I think those guys have really come on, just in the little bit I’ve been with them,” Werner said. “All of them are good kids, guys who really want to work hard. These are the type of guys, when you go into a staff meeting, you don’t have to worry about getting a memo about a guy was late to class, a guy did this, a guy did that.
“These guys are doing the right thing and it carries over to the football field.”
As a sophomore, Bentley completed just over 62 percent of his passes for 2,794 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
“I love him. If it was up to him, he would live in this building,” Werner said. “He’s up here working out, watching film, studying, just picking your brain. This is the type of guy you want to play the quarterback position.”
Bentley remains atop of the depth chart while Scarnecchia continues to receive most of the second-team reps during spring practice. Urich and Joyner, both of whom were signed by coach Will Muschamp, have also been available this spring.
“Between [Urich] and Dakereon, I want to see – both of them can really run, so I want to see if there are some things they can do, to really stretch the defense by using their legs, and both of them can throw, too,” Werner said. “Obviously, if you can run and throw, that can cause a lot of pressure.”
Joyner, like Bentley, has a displayed a strong work ethic during Werner’s first few months on the job.
“[Joyner’s] a good athlete. He’s one of those guys, you’ve got to kick him out, because he’s over here too much, so he’s going to work hard and try to learn everything,” Werner said.
For Werner, it’s “way too far down the road” to consider what type of a role Joyner could have this fall.
