South Carolina football: Former Gamecocks gearing up for NFL combine

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp has a an issue with the NFL and its draft process.

They didn’t invite enough former Gamecocks to the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.

Hayden Hurst (tight end), Jamarcus King (cornerback), Skai Moore (linebacker) and Taylor Stallworth (defensive tackle) were invited to participate in the annual event, which begins Feb. 27.

“Those guys have worked extremely hard and are certainly very deserving of the opportunity, as are some other guys that didn’t get invited to the combine, quite frankly. It’s not an answer-all to go to the combine,” Muschamp said. “I’ve had guys get drafted in the third and fourth round that didn’t go to the combine.

“They need to make their pro day count, and I know they will, but I’m proud of the four that got invited and certainly I felt like we should have had more.”

Hurst is expected to be the first former South Carolina football player to be selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. analyst Bucky Brooks ranks Hurst as the No. 2 tight end in the draft.

“Hurst is a big-bodied seam runner with soft hands and outstanding box-out skills,” Brooks wrote.

The draft runs three days, starting April 26.
