Gamecocks on top
Jalen Huff has a pretty good source inside the South Carolina football program.
The 2020 cornerback from Buford (Ga.) High School is a cousin of Gamecocks cornerback Jamyest Williams, a rising sophomore who started at nickelback during his first season in Columbia.
On Saturday, while on his first visit to the school, Huff received an offer from South Carolina.
“After the tour and after I took pictures, I went to meet Coach Muschamp and [defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson] and they explained to me that they looked at my film and they liked my ball skills and how I read coverages.
“I went over coverages with ‘T-Rob’ and they told me they’d like to offer me a scholarship and to stay in touch and come back this spring.”
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect was happy to add the offer to his list, which also includes Arkansas State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Louisville, Ole Miss and Syracuse.
“It meant a lot, not only because of the family there, but when I was down there, it really felt like it was home,” Huff said of South Carolina. “Everybody treated me right. The coaching staff was really nice. For my first time being there, I felt like I knew the staff, knew everybody. It means a lot.”
Coming off the trip last weekend, the Gamecocks are at the top of his list.
“They showed a lot of hospitality,” Huff said. “I really liked the campus and the coaching staff showed a lot of love and made me feel comfortable, so I’m really big on them right now.”
As a sophomore at Athens Academy, Huff had 32 tackles, 6 interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Williams recorded 38 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and 2 interceptions during his freshman campaign at South Carolina.
“It was really big because I’ve watched him my whole life. … To see him go out and perform like that, it’s really exciting and just knowing I have the same opportunity to do the same stuff, it’s really, really exciting. I’m proud of him,” Huff said.
During their conversations, Huff’s received plenty of insight from Williams on life as a Gamecock.
“He told me they really work hard, so to just prepare myself. He told me everybody is going to make me a better person, a better player on and off the field, because everybody is there to help you,” Huff said. “Nobody is going to bring you down. Everybody is pushing for the same goal, whether you graduate or make it to the league, everybody is pushing and everybody is behind you, so you can’t really mess up. It’s a good environment to be in.”
