South Carolina-Texas A&M preview, keys to the game

Texas A&M is one of two teams from the SEC averaging over 40 points per game. The Aggies are also one of three SEC teams averaging more than 250 yards rushing and 450 total yards.

“[Coordinator] Noel Mazzone does a fantastic job,” South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said. “The two backs they’ve got are big-time runners. They are going to create space and get in 1-on-1 matchups. We have to tackle and get these guys on the ground. They run the inside zone extremely well and the thing can bounce all the way to the backside.”

Trayveon Williams, who’s averaging 6.6 yards per carry this season, has rushed for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns over three games. Keith Ford has rushed for 232 yards and 5 scores.

Christian Kirk, the Aggies leading receiver with 19 catches for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns, is “as good a player as there is in college football, in terms of a returner and a receiver.” Muschamp said.

Kirk, who has 292 kickoff return yards, is fifth in the country among wide receivers in all-purpose yardage.

Freshman quarterback Kellen Mond has completed only 50 percent of his throws, but he has 649 yards and 6 touchdowns passing. On the ground, he’s rushed for 157 yards and a score.

“Really has continued to come on since he’s played in the UCLA game and the Nicholls game and the Lafayette game and going into the Arkansas game, continues to improve,” Muschamp said.

Texas A&M’s defense is coordinated by longtime SEC assistant John Chavis.

“They are very active inside with [Zaycoven] Henderson and [Kingsley] Keke, Daylon Mack and guys that we have to be able to handle inside,” Muschamp said. “Jarrett Johnson is an outstanding rusher on the edge, creates a lot of issues for you. They are leading the league in sacks and he’s certainly a huge part of that.

“Armani Watts is as good a safety as there is in our league and has played there for a long time.”
