Andy Staples is impressed with Alabama. And he considers Auburn and Georgia as the only possible threats for the Crimson Tide in the SEC.
In releasing his top four teams, the Sports Illustrated analyst named Alabama as the top squad in the country. This is no surprise, given the Crimson Tide’s destruction of their competition during a 5-0 start. The past two weeks have shown Alabama’s potential, with the Crimson Tide crushing Vanderbilt 59-0 and Ole Miss 66-3.
In his commentary, Staples mentions Auburn and Georgia as the only SEC teams that “maybe” can challenge the Crimson Tide later this year.
“It also feels like maybe Auburn, maybe Georgia, are the only SEC teams that can compete with them,” Staples said in the clip below. “And coincidentally, those are probably the two teams they’ll see at the end of the season. We know they’ll play Auburn. We’ll see about Georgia.”
For what it’s worth, Staples included Clemson in his No. 2 spot, followed by Penn State and TCU.
Staples’ words about Alabama’s possible challengers in the SEC are correct. Outside of Auburn and Georgia, there look to be no significant obstacles between the Crimson Tide and another berth in the College Football Playoff. The Iron Bowl on Nov. 25 is looking juicier by the week. And a possible meeting with Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 would be fun.
We’ll learn soon if anyone, including Auburn and Georgia, can challenge a stacked Alabama team.
