Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings , a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we talk the latest with Alabama’s top offensive line target.
Nicholas Petit-Frere visiting Alabama next weekend
Nicholas Petit-Frere has been Alabama’s top offensive line target for several months now. The Crimson Tide will get their last chance to impress the 5-star offensive tackle out of Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) on Jan. 19, SEC Country confirmed.
That weekend will arguably be the team’s biggest recruiting weekend in the lead up to National Signing Day on Feb. 7. Alabama will celebrate its national championship win over Georgia on Jan. 20. Because of that, the team will likely try to get all of its top remaining targets in town that weekend because Tuscaloosa will be buzzing and it’ll be an opportunity to show the recruits that if they choose Alabama, that they too can be a part of a championship parade one day.

As for Petit-Frere, one source close to the program told SEC Country that he believes the nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle is going to choose either Alabama or Ohio State, which he visits on Feb. 2. According to the source, Petit-Frere wants to choose the program that he feels best suits his dream of making it to the NFL. Right now, those programs are Alabama and Ohio State. It also doesn’t hurt both program’s chances when it comes to landing Petit-Frere now that Notre Dame’s offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, who was one of the best in all of college football, was hired by the Chicago Bears. Petit-Frere is strongly considering the Fighting Irish.
We were told that Petit-Frere, who values education and a degree, feels like the schools he’s still considering: Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State all offer a good enough education for him.
“At the end of the day, it will come down to what I feel is best for me,” Petit-Frere told SEC Country last week. “I’m just going to see how it rolls and go from there. I’m trying to learn about all the schools recruiting me before I commit.”
Who else will visit Alabama next weekend?
Expect this list to grow in the coming days now that the championship parade date is set, but, right now, this is who SEC Country has as visiting Tuscaloosa next weekend:
- 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell
- 4-star quarterback James Foster
- 3-star linebacker commit Vernon Jackson
- 3-star defensive end Malik Langham
- 4-star wide receiver Justyn Ross
- 3-star cornerback Eddie Smith
- 5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr.
- 4-star wide receiver signee Xavier Williams
Two names to know at DB
We mentioned him above as a visitor next weekend, but Eddie Smith, a 3-star prospect out of Slidell, La., is being evaluated by the staff. The top defensive back targets remain the same as they’ve been for quite some time now: Tyson Campbell, Patrick Surtain Jr. and Isaac Taylor-Stuart.
Smith doesn’t have an offer yet, but don’t be surprised if one is extended his way next weekend when he visits.
Another name to know is 4-star junior college cornerback Benjie Franklin out of Navarro College (Corsicana, Texas). Franklin recorded 62 tackles, 6 interceptions, 19 pass breakups, 4 tackles for loss and a sack in 10 games this season. Franklin is expected to visit Auburn this weekend and Ole Miss on Feb. 2. He’s another defensive back the Tide have their eyes on.
Nick Saban said that he would like to add 5 defensive backs in the 2018 class. Alabama has 3 signed in this recruiting cycle in 4-star prospects Jalyn Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Saivion Smith.
Something to keep an eye on?
Texas A&M decided to retain Terry Price on its coaching staff. Price will coach defensive ends on new coach Jimbo Fisher’s staff. Why is that important to Alabama recruiting? Well, 4-star Crimson Tide defensive end commit Bobby Brown was committed to the Aggies before de-committing from TAMU in December and choosing Alabama a few days later.
Brown has a very close relationship with Price, and now that it’s official that he’s remaining in College Station, perhaps that opens the door back up for the Aggies to get back in the mix for him.
Brown told SEC Country that he’s not planning on visiting any school this weekend.
