NC State-Syracuse preview, keys to the game
Things seem to be looking up right now for the Wolfpack. Although they faced and defeated a Deondre Francois-less Florida State squad, it can still be marked down as a long-awaited signature win for Dave Doeren in his fifth season at the helm. The Wolfpack enjoyed turnover-free ball from Ryan Finley and strong performances from both Nyheim Hines (24 carries, 94 yards) and Jakobi Meyers (five catches, 112 yards, one touchdown), while sacking James Blackman four times in the freshman’s first career start. NC State only has a single blemish on its record – a loss to South Carolina to open the season – but has won its last three.
Meanwhile, for Syracuse, they can probably feel good about how closely they played LSU on the road on Saturday, as it certainly will be seen as a sign of progress for a program still looking to get back to the national prominence it enjoyed decades ago. The Orange nearly matched the Tigers in overall yardage (414-384), lost the time of possession battle by just 16 seconds (30:08 to 29:52), and enjoyed a strong performance from Eric Dungey. However, they struggled to run the ball against a talented defensive front and were unable to respond to a LSU team out to prevent a letdown in front of their home fans.
NC State faces a critical juncture of games starting with Saturday against Syracuse. A win will put them at 2-0 in the ACC Atlantic Division with Louisville, already with a loss to Clemson on its ledger, coming to town on Thursday. Getting a win against both the Orange and the Cardinals would put the Wolfpack at 3-0 and help them keep pace with the Tigers atop the divisional standings. First, though, they’ll need to knock off the Orange, who could play spoiler to the Wolfpack’s chances early on.
