Steve Alford calls Lonzo Ball’s everybody gets paid comments ‘ludicrous’

Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball said last week that student athletes should be paid because “ everybody’s getting paid anyway” in response to the pay-for-play NCAA basketball scandal. His former UCLA coach Steve Alford strongly refuted such allegations.

“I mean, that’s ludicrous,” Alford said, via the Los Angeles Times’ . “I mean, that’s all I’ve got to say on that. I mean, that’s crazy. Not everybody’s getting paid.”

Unlike some of their counterparts, UCLA has not been linked in the FBI probe. And while Ball said everyone is being paid, he admitted he didn’t accept any money due to a conscious attempt to not give Big Baller Brand any bad publicity.

In the midst of a two-game losing streak and an FBI investigation sweeping across the college basketball landscape, Alford takes pride in UCLA’s name being void of scandal.

“When it comes to that, I always sleep well,” Alford explained. “I know how we do things. I know how our staff operates, I know how I operate, so that’s never an issue when I go to bed.”
