Syracuse-Wake Forest basketball preview
After a win against Louisville on Monday, the Syracuse Orange face a struggling Wake Forest team at home on Sunday.
Syracuse enters the game 5-6 in the ACC but came into the weekend a half-game back of a number of teams in the middle of the standings. It hopes to jump into the top nine to avoid playing on the first day of the ACC Tournament, which begins on March 6.
The Orange face the Demon Deacons in need of help to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. According to projected tournament seedings from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi, they find themselves as one of the last four teams out.
A victory on Sunday won’t do much to help them gain better standing with the selection committee, but a number of key games remain on the Orange schedule. Four of their final six games — No. 25 Miami, No. 21 North Carolina, No. 9 Duke and the regular-season finale against No. 16 Clemson — are against ranked opponents. Winning a few of those, along with a strong showing in the ACC Tournament, should give them a boost.
The Orange are coming off a 78-73 victory over the Cardinals on Monday. Tyus Battle (25 points), Frank Howard (22) and Oshae Brissett (16) carried the scoring load for a Syracuse team that has been ravaged by injuries and has six healthy scholarship players.
Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons are in the midst of a poor season as they sit at 2-10 in the ACC. Barring a lengthy winning streak heading into the conference tournament, Danny Manning’s team is assured to finish toward the bottom of the standings.
After a 19-14 record and an appearance in the First Four last season, the Demon Deacons will miss out on the postseason altogether short of a miracle down the stretch.
Wake Forest’s latest loss came at No. 25 Miami on Wednesday, an 87-81 win for the Hurricanes. Bryant Crawford’s 23 points and Chaundee Brown’s 20 were not enough for the Demon Deacons, despite shooting 47.7 percent and outrebounding the Hurricanes 35-33.
The difference in that one was at the free-throw line, with Miami holding a 37-15 edge in free-throw attempts. The Hurricanes made 26 shots from the stripe, and it went a long way in deciding the outcome.
This is the second of two regular-season meetings between the Orange and the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest won the first matchup 73-67 in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Jan. 3.
Crawford had 19 points and Terrence Thompson added 13 as the Demon Deacons overcame a 23-point performance by Howard, who was 5 of 7 from 3-point range.
