TCU football: 3 offensive breakout players for 2018

The TCU Horned Frogs have one of the deepest rosters at skill positions that they’ve had in quite some time.

The wide receiver and running back spots are filled to the brim with the type of speedy talent that Gary Patterson loves. Starting quarterback Kenny Hill is gone, as is starting running back Kyle Hicks, but the Frogs have players ready and waiting to fill those shoes.

Here’s a look at three players on the offensive side of the ball that could have breakout years in 2018.

Shawn Robinson, quarterback

We caught a glimpse of what Robinson can do on the field when he filled in as a starter in the Texas Tech game. Big, fast, and with a strong arm, Robinson is the future for TCU. He’s the favorite to win the job coming out of camp over freshman Justin Rogers and transfer Michael Collins. Robinson will be handed the keys to an offense with a litany of talented wideouts like Jaelan Austin, KaVontae Turpin and Jalen Reagor. If he lives up to what TCU fans are expecting out of him, he has a chance to be truly special.

Anthony McKinney, tackle

Joseph Noteboom protected Hill’s blindside last season, but now both players have graduated. If Shawn Robinson is to start, he’ll need a big, physical presence at left tackle to keep him upright. Enter McKinney, a 6-foot-8, 330 pound junior college transfer that was the third-highest rated tackle in his class. He could easily start right away on the Horned Frogs’ line and put that size to good use. It’s strange to say that a lineman could have a breakout year, but McKinney fits the bill.

Fabian Franklin, running back

Darius Anderson is the clear No. 1 choice for TCU at running back now that Hicks has departed. But Franklin has a chance to crack the running back rotation and make some plays this season if he isn’t redshirted. He was the No. 13 running back in the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports, and is a physical runner at 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds. And even if he doesn’t see the field, he’s already made a positive impact — he flipped his commitment from Mississippi State to TCU, proving that the Frogs have no problem in recruiting battles with SEC schools.
