KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee returned to practice on Tuesday without its most dynamic receiver, sophomore Marquez Callaway, who was held out for precautionary reasons.
“Marquez Callaway we held out,” Tennessee coach Butch Jones said. “But if it was a game week, he’d be out here.”
Callaway appeared to suffer a whiplash injury in Saturday’s loss to Georgia, coming down awkwardly after what appeared to be a leaping catch until he hit the ground. Callaway averages 24.75 yards per catch.
The Vols have a bye on Saturday before returning to action against South Carolina at noon on Oct. 14 at Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee was missing seven starters in its lopsided 41-0 loss to the Bulldogs, but one of the players who has been missing since the preseason returned to practice last week and is on pace to return against the Gamecocks.
“Austin Smith practiced today,” Jones said, referring to the 6-foot-3, 236-pound redshirt sophomore who was running first team at strong side linebacker when he injured his knee in August. “It’s more him getting in football condition and becoming more and more confident in his knee.”
Tennessee learned Tuesday that safety Todd Kelly Jr., the team’s leading tackler in 2016, has undergone season-ending knee surgery.
Kelly’s last appearance was against Indiana State in the second game of the season.
Jones did not update the status of kick returner and safety Evan Berry, who has not played since the season-opening 42-41 double-overtime win over Georgia Tech.
Berry suffered a season-ending knee injury last November, and while he was healthy enough to return, he has not appeared 100 percent and might ultimately require surgery.
