Tennessee football podcast: Vols begin bye week ‘test’ on practice field

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee returns to practice on Tuesday to begin what Coach Butch Jones referred to as a test in the aftermath of Saturdays’ humbling loss to Georgia.

“Right now we’re being tested, (and) that’s what I told our football team, our character is being tested, everything about us,” Jones said after the Vols lost 41-0 to the Bulldogs. “But, there’s no excuses. There’s no hiding behind it. We’re going to find out who the true leaders are, and we’re going to find out who the true competitors are. The bye week is coming at the right time.”

Tennessee (3-2) returns to action at noon on Oct. 14 against South Carolina (3-2).

The Vols lost backup offensive guard Venzell Boulware on Monday, when the sophomore announced on Twitter he’s leaving the program after not being put on the field in the Georgia game.

“Everything will be looked at in our program from A to Z,” Jones said, asked about how he’ll use the bye week. “We have good kids, and I saw some players step up and some leadership emerge, but we have to make sure we look at anything and everything that gives us an opportunity to win.”

The Tennessee players, no doubt, will have friends and family members asking them how things are going in the clubhouse.

Many of the Vols players are active on social media, and it would be hard for them not to notice what is being said about their head coach and the future of the program.

SEC Country’s Mike Griffith and WNML’s Josh Ward discuss where Tennessee football is at the start of the practice week, and how the Vols players should move forward.
