Tennessee texts: Dan Mullen was set to meet with John Currie before taking Florida job

Text messages sent to and from former Tennessee athletic director John Currie became public record this week, and Florida coach Dan Mullen is among those implicated.

According to the documents obtained by SEC Country, a text from Mullen to Currie says, “Talked with Peyton (Manning) last night. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow.”

According to the records, that message was sent on Nov. 25. The very next day, Chip Kelly was hired at UCLA and Mullen accepted the head job at Florida.

And in a move that would alter Tennessee’s history forever, Currie and his coaching search turned their attention to Greg Schiano.

The messages don’t provide all the context, but it’s likely Mullen was immediately offered the Florida job after Kelly chose UCLA over the Gators. And when UF, where Mullen previously coached a national championship team as assistant, came calling, Tennessee didn’t have a chance.

According to Knoxville News’ Blake Toppmeyer, Currie requested that Mullen be sent a memorandum of understanding on Nov. 25. If things were truly that serious between the Vols and Mullen, it’s fascinating to think about what would have happened in Knoxville if Kelly had chosen Florida.
