Texas Tech creates walk-on scholarship in honor of Luke Gonsioroski

Texas Tech-Walk on-Scholarship

Texas Tech football is paying tribute to the late Red Raiders quarterback-commit Luke Gonsioroski.

Texas Tech athletics announced on Saturday that it had created an annual walk-on scholarship in honor of Gonsioroski. The team additionally announced that Gonsioroski’s family will receive an on-field recognition during the Red Raiders’ game against No. 15 Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

According to a statement from the team, the scholarship will be awarded to the player who “best embodies the character and steadfastness that Gonsioroski displayed on a daily basis.”

Gonsioroski, who committed to play as a quarterback at Texas Tech this season, died on Aug. 7 after an ongoing battle with cancer. Gonsioroski had recovered from a battle with cancer prior to his senior year of high school, but the cancer returned during the offseason before he enrolled at Texas Tech.

Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that Gonsioroski was “an inspiration in the way he lived his life,” according to the statement. Kingsbury has already paid tribute to Gonsioroski by sporting “LG” initials on his shoes for each of the Red Raiders’ first three games this season.

The Texas Tech-Oklahoma State game will kickoff at 7 p.m. CT from Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. The game will be televised on FOX.
