Texas Tech DB DaMarcus Fields named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

DaMarcus Fields-Big 12 Newcomer of the Week-Texas Tech-Oklahoma State

A game-changing performance on Saturday against Oklahoma State has resulted in Texas Tech defensive back DaMarcus Fields being honored as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

The highlight of Fields’ evening came by way of 95-yard interception returned for a touchdown as Oklahoma State was threatening to take a two-score lead in the first quarter. Instead, Fields’ pick-six knotted things up at 7-7 and marked the longest interception Texas Tech has returned for a touchdown since Dave Parks set the school record on a 98-yard return against Colorado in 1962.

To compliment his pick-six, Field also recorded a career high 5 tackles, as well as 1 pass breakup. The effort marked his second strong showing in as many weeks, as Fields forced and recovered a fumble in Texas Tech’s win over Houston.

Of course, Oklahoma State went on to win this time around, 41-34.

Fields now becomes the third Red Raider to be honored with a weekly Big 12 award this season, as Ja’Deion High earned Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Sept. 18 and Dakota Allen was named the Big 12 Defensive player of the Week on Sept. 25.

Next up, Fields and the Red Raiders will take the field in hopes of a bounce-back effort against the 1-3 Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday. The game will be televised on FOX Sports 1 at 11:00 a.m. CT.
