Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State preview, keys to the game
- Texas Tech has to limit Oklahoma State’s explosiveness. TCU beat Oklahoma State because they were able to limit the big plays from a Cowboys offense that traffics in massive plays. James Washington is the most explosive player in college football, and he’s going to beat everyone at least once, he even beat TCU for an 80 yard touchdown in a loss. Oklahoma State has a loss under their belts, but make no mistake, this is a top ten team. If Texas Tech can force Oklahoma State to slowly and methodically beat them, they’ll have a great chance of winning. If the Red Raiders allow Oklahoma State to get points and yards in chunks, it’ll be over very soon.
- Texas Tech’s wide receiver cannot make mistakes. Keke Coutee was dominant last Saturday, but Derrick Willies struggled to make an impact. Texas Tech’s wide receivers cannot have drops or poor routes against this Oklahoma State secondary. The Texas Tech offense needs to thrive on third and long, and their wide receivers are going to be a huge part of that. Keke Coutee has proven that he can play with anyone in the country, so has Dylan Cantrell, but there’s a lot to be proven elsewhere. The Texas Tech wide receivers need to be incredible to keep those chains moving.
- The team that protects their quarterback the best will win this game. Oklahoma State has a lot of injuries on their offensive line, and Texas Tech is still fairly young. It’s a total cliche, but cliches have truth to them. Texas Tech has to protect Nic Shimonek. That’s the end all be all of this game. If the Red Raiders can wear out the Oklahoma State defense and keep Mason Rudolph and that explosive offense off the field, they will have a massive chance to win this game. This feels a lot like a top 5 ranked TCU team coming to town two years ago, the only difference being Oklahoma State has a loss. Texas Tech lost that game, but it took a literal miracle. This one might end up very similarly, provided Texas Tech’s defense answers the bell and the Red Raiders protect Shimonek.
