Tim Drevno stepping down as Michigan’s offensive coordinator, per reports

Michigan offensive coordinator Tim Drevno is leaving Jim Harbaugh’s program, according to multiple reports. Drevno, who was with Michigan football since 2015, also coached the Wolverines’ offensive line.

Both Sports Illustrated and the Wolverine Lounge reported the news Friday morning.

Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated also reported that Ed Warriner, who Michigan hired as an analyst, would take over Drevno’s offensive line coaching duties.

Michigan’s offense struggled under Drevno in 2017. Michigan averaged 25.2 points and 348.9 yards per game last season. Those numbers ranked eighth and ninth in the Big Ten, respectively. Using three different quarterbacks, Michigan’s passing game was especially stagnant in 2017. The Wolverines ranked 11th in the Big Ten in passing yards with 171.2 per game last season.

Michigan had the Big Ten’s best scoring offense in 2016 with 40.0 points per game. The Wolverines gave Drevno a five-year contract extension last offseason and he made $1.15 million last season, according to the USA Today coaching salary database.

Drevno also had jobs on Harbaugh’s staffs at Stanford and with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL. He spent the 2014 season with USC before coming to Ann Arbor.

There was no official word yet from Michigan about Drevno’s departure or who would fill the role of offensive coordinator. Harbaugh recently added former Florida head coach Jim McElwain to his staff as the wide receivers coach. McElwain previously worked as Alabama’s offensive coordinator under Nick Saban.
