UCLA-Colorado keys to the game

Stop the Run Early

The Bruins have allowed 1,113 total yards of offense over its last two games, including 567 total rushing yards. That simply won’t get the job done and the Bruins know it. UCLA is currently ranked No. 125 in total defense, and is dead last in the country in rushing defense, allowing 307.5 yards per game.

Colorado’s rushing offense is ranked No. 7 in the Pac-12, which isn’t spectacular. However, senior running back Phillip Lindsay is a work horse and has the third most rushing yards in the Pac-12 this season. The Buffs want to pound the rock early and establish a tempo. The Bruins have to stop the run early or else it could be another long night for the defense.

Air it Out

Josh Rosen is UCLA’s offense at this point. UCLA has the best passing offense in the country through 4 games. As he goes, the Bruins go. While Colorado pass defense is very good, only allowing 199.5 yards per game through the air, UCLA has to play to its strength. When Rosen gets hot, there is almost nothing an opposing defense can do to stop him. The Bruins needs to get Rosen in a rhythm early and let him do what he does.

In UCLA’s season-opening thriller against Texas A&M, the team had one of the biggest comebacks in the history of college football. However, over the past two games against Memphis and Stanford, the Bruins have failed to finish. The team has been in both games, but the defense simply hasn’t held up its end of the bargain. In order to beat a tough Colorado team, the Bruins have to win the fourth quarter. Perhaps being in the friendly confines of the Rose Bowl will inspire the team in the final 15 minutes.
