Urban Meyer’s dominance, Ohio State basketball schedule improvements, Anthony Cook decision nears

Urban Meyer-Ohio State football-Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State football is the No. 1 topic in Wake Up Sloopy every day — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Urban Meyer has dominated former assistants

Urban Meyer will face one of his former assistants Saturday when Maryland coach DJ Durkin and his Terrapins come to town. If it’s anything like Meyer’s recent games against his protégés, it won’t be close.

Meyer has outscored his former assistants by an unthinkable 235-3 margin in the last four such games. The last former assistant whose team scored a touchdown against Meyer was Illinois coach Tim Beckman … in 2014.

Ohio State basketball beefs up schedule

Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann vowed to put together a better nonconference schedule, and he’s living up to that promise. It was announced Tuesday that the Buckeyes will open the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons with a home-and-home series against Cincinnati.

“The idea of challenging ourselves in the nonconference while also providing an attractive game for our collective fan bases certainly made sense to us,” Holtmann said. “We understand the challenge of opening the season on the road vs. a high-caliber opponent with a younger team provides some risk but we felt like it was the right decision at this time.”

Texas gaining on Ohio State for Anthony Cook?

Anthony Cook, a 5-star cornerback from Houston, has long had Ohio State as his leader. But there was always a chance that Texas’ proximity would help the Longhorns close that gap, and it appears that’s happened.

Cook, the No. 2 cornerback in the Class of 2018 per the 247SPorts composite, now has Ohio State and Texas tied at the top after another visit to Austin. With a decision coming Oct. 30, it will be interesting to see what the Buckeyes can do to end up on top.
