Virginia Tech-Clemson preview, keys to the game

The biggest game of the weekend will take place Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Virginia Tech has handled all of its challenges so far this season and is steadily climbing up the Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll rankings since beating West Virginia in its season opener.

The Hokies haven’t been tested like Clemson has, but they’ve taken care of business against Delaware (27-0), East Carolina (64-17) and Old Dominion (38-0) exactly how they were supposed to.

Of course, Clemson is a much different kind of challenge.

“Clemson is one of the elite teams in all of America right now,” Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said during the ACC coaches teleconference. “There is really no debating that. It’s our first conference game, our conference opener. It’s one game in our season. So we’re anxious to go play. We’re excited to play this game at home and see how things go.”

Virginia Tech’s Josh Jackson has been one of the better quarterbacks in the country so far this season, completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 1,127 yards, with 11 touchdowns against just 1 interception. He’s also added 144 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.

Jackson’s favorite target, Cam Phillips, is among the top wide receivers in the country this season. He already has 34 receptions for 523 yards and 5 touchdowns. He leads the nation in receiving yardage after four games.

Clemson, the reigning national champions, remains undefeated after a tough four-game stretch that included taking on Auburn at home and Louisville on the road. The Tigers scored 27 unanswered points in the fourth quarter last week to beat Boston College, 34-7, and extend their winning streak to nine games.

Next comes another tough test with a night game on the road at raucous and rowdy Lane Stadium.

“Huge challenge with Virginia Tech,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said during the ACC coaches teleconference earlier this week. “This is a great football team we’re getting ready to play. We know that very well because we played them in the ACC Championship game last year. I know there’s a lot of different people involved now, but still, same program, and Coach (Justin) Fuente has done an unbelievable job there, but it’s going to be exciting.”

Clemson defeated Virginia Tech 42-35 in the ACC title game a year ago after holding off a late drive by the Hokies.

Clemson has been led offensively by new quarterback Kelly Bryant, who has completed 67.9 percent of his his passes, with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and run for 268 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Tigers rank third nationally in scoring defense (9.3 points per game) and total defense (227 yards per game) and are tied for second in sacks (17). Virginia Tech is allowing 10.3 points per game, which is second in the ACC.
