Wake Forest-Florida State preview, keys to the game

Wake Forest is 4-0 for the second straight season — the Demon Deacons finished 7-6 a year ago — after going 3-9 in the 2014 and 2015 campaigns.

Wake Forest has lost five straight games against Florida State and is 6-28-1 in the all-time series.

The Demon Deacons’ impressive start to the 2017 season has featured a balanced offense that, total yardage-wise, couldn’t be much more balanced. Wake Forest has 865 yards rushing and 863 yards passing so far.

Quarterback John Wolford has completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 676 yards, with 8 touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s run for a team-high 269 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Running back Arkeem Byrd, a redshirt freshman, has 233 yards rushing, with an average 6.1 yards per carry, and 1 touchdown.

Redshirt freshman Greg Dortch has been Wake’s leading wide receiver with 20 catches for 242 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s the first freshman in Wake Forest history to catch a touchdown pass in each of his first four games.

Though it has played just two games this season, Florida State’s 2017 campaign has already been an eventful one.

The Seminoles lost their season opener, against top-ranked Alabama, and quarterback Deondre Francois to a season-ending injury in the process. Then they didn’t play for two weeks, because of Hurricane Irma, with a game against Louisiana-Monroe canceled and a game against Miami postponed.

Then last week Florida State returned to action, with true freshman James Blackman at quarterback, but lost top wide receiver Auden Tate to an injury and then lost the game against visiting N.C. State.

Now the Seminoles, 0-2 for the first time in 28 years and unranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2011, are looking to get back to their winning ways starting this week against unbeaten Wake Forest.

Florida State’s offense, led by Blackman, will have to get going.

The Seminoles are last in the ACC in scoring at 14 points per game, last in rushing at 72 yards per game, last in rushing yards per attempt (2.72) and last in total offense with 316 yards per game.
