Almost everything you see from Florida State spring football practice just three days in should be prefaced with the fact that they’re not even wearing shoulder pads. However, wide receiver D.J. Matthews did something Friday morning that will undoubtedly transcend that.
Matthews was a highly-anticipated 4-star recruit in the Class of 2017. He played in just one game for the Seminoles last fall and had just a single catch for 12 yards.
With a new coaching staff and a new crop of recruits coming in, it’s easy to forget exactly how much hype there was for the No. 51 overall player in the country just a year ago. But Matthews reminded everybody with this.

Again, this is only the third practice of the spring and everybody is still in shells and shorts. However, that sort of quickness and burst certainly translates.
These types of moments don’t guarantee that a player becomes a star or even that he earns a lot of playing time, but it turns just about everyone’s heads, including the coaching staff. So if we see this regularly from Matthews, especially after the pads go on, you can expect Taggart and his assistants to find ways to utilize these skills regularly.
And even if they can’t make it work, this is incredibly fun to watch.
