TEMPE, Ariz. — Tennessee junior Abby Lockman is known best for leadership behind the plate as a catcher, but on Saturday she proved a threat at the plate, as well.
Lockman came through with a two-out, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Lady Vols to a dramatic 6-5 victory over Utah.
“I was thinking ‘God be with me, I want to do this for my team,” said Lockman, a junior from Corona, Calif. “She threw me back to back changeups, and I saw it good and hit it good.”
Lockman said she went up there focused on the at-bat and nothing else — a lesson co-head coaches Karen and Ralph Weekly pushed on the team during and after sluggish 6-2 and 7-6 wins over Western Michigan and San Jose State on Friday.
“I told myself whatever happens, happens,” Lockman said, asked about her thoughts before the at-bat. “I’m going to leave it on the line for my team.”
Tennessee had subbed in Brooke Langston at first base to pinch run, which proved pivotal.
“I saved Brooke for that situation,” Ralph Weekly said, “because I knew she’d be willing to run through a brick wall.”
And she did, as Utah’s catcher was called for obstruction, granting the Lady Vols the game-winning run.
Matty Moss, who came on in relief to pitch the seventh inning and get the win, said Lockman will be a popular hero this week.
“Abby is such a great girl, all the pitchers love her,” Moss said. “She’s a great catcher, so funny, and she keeps us relaxed and commands the field so well.”
Lockman, who entered the game 2-for-14 through the first five games of the tournament, also hit a solo home run for the Lady Vols in the sixth inning to cut the Utah lead to 5-3.
“Her performance behind the plate is even better, she’ s blocking a lot of pitches because we have a lot of down-ball pitchers,” Ralph Weekly said. “But it’s exciting to see her hitting. Abby comes in every morning to hit.”
Saturday, Lockman’s hard work paid off in a big way with a 3-for-4 hitting performance she won’t soon forget.
