The relationship between West Virginia offensive coordinator Jake Spavital and TCU quarterback Kenny Hill hasn’t taken much of a hit since the two’s Texas A&M days.
Spavital left Texas A&M to take over as the offensive coordinator at Cal before returning to Big 12 country this season to run West Virginia’s offense.
Hill transferred from A&M to TCU in 2015 and became the Horned Frogs’ starter a year later. In his second season as a starter, Hill has the Frogs at 5-0 and Spavital says the two have kept in contact since he recruited Hill to College Station, Texas.
“Kenny, of course I was a part of recruiting him at Texas A&M,” Spavital said during a media session on Tuesday. “He redshirted the first year behind Johnny Manziel. I really got to spend two years with the kid, who is an exceptional kid. Pretty impressive what he is doing.”
Spavital says he’s exchanged a few words over text message with Hill over the past few weeks, but their text conversations have started to dwindle as West Virginia’s clash with TCU gets closer.
He still look forwards to seeing Hill and his family when the Mountaineers visit Fort Worth, Texas, at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
“The talking has been kind of limited now over the past 10 days, but it has been pretty funny going back,” Spavital said. “I have just been sending emoji’s to him, like the surprised face emoji, just to see how he reacts to it and he just laughs and says ‘I’ll see you Saturday.'”
