What Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said after 31-24 loss to Maryland

Minnesota had an opportunity on Saturday to improve its record to 4-0 but couldn’t hold off Maryland, losing the game, 31-24. The loss is the Golden Gophers’ first of the season.

Minnesota lost a close game to Maryland — who started its third different quarterback of the season in this contest — but never held a lead. The Terrapins led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and then 17-10 at halftime.

The Golden Gophers tied the game on three separate occasions, but never got over the hump. With 1:10 remaining, Maryland’s Ty Johnson ran it in from 34-yards out for the game-winning score.

Up next of the slate for Minnesota is a 3:30 p.m. ET game against Purdue on Oct. 7 on the road. Purdue will enter the contest at 2-2 overall, while Minnesota is 3-1.
