What New Mexico State said about Arkansas following Hogs’ win

Arkansas-New Mexico State

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Arkansas defeated New Mexico State 42-24 Saturday afternoon at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.

The Razorbacks (2-2, 0-1 SEC) led 28-10 at halftime thanks to 322 yards of offense, and  finished with 494 yards. Senior quarterback Austin Allen had a particularly strong game, completing 19 of his 26 attempts for 264 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Arkansas’ running game also had a good day. Sophomore starter Devwah Whaley led the way with 119 yards on the ground. Freshman Chase Hayden added 48, and senior David Williams contributed 47.

The Hogs’ defense struggled, however. The unit was able to slow New Mexico State standout running back Larry Rose III, but the Aggies’ passing game had an impressive day. Senior quarterback Tyler Rogers threw for 344 yards and 2 touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jaleel Scott accounted for 174 of those yards while averaging 19.3 yards per catch.

A pair of forced turnovers — an interception in the end zone and fumble on a kickoff — played a huge role in the Razorbacks eventually pulling away.

Arkansas will return to action next Saturday at South Carolina for its second SEC game. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.

Here’s what New Mexico State said about Arkansas following the game:

Coach Doug Martin

On New Mexico State’s performance …

“I am proud of how our team fought today against a really good Arkansas team. We were able to move the ball well through the air and compete with a strong SEC opponent.”

On what cost them …

“We played hard, but we got overpowered in different areas. We turned some players loose in the back end and let their receivers get too open.

“Offensively, we played exceptional against a SEC defense. Defensively, it was the mismatch. We had trouble getting off the field and getting the stops that we needed.”

Athletic director Mario Moccia

“Proud of [New Mexico State football]. Played an SEC opponent tough! No injuries, which is huge! [New Mexico State] fans: We appreciate your support!!!”
