Who is Carsen Edwards? 5 things to know about the Purdue guard

Carsen Edwards is a 6-foot-1 guard for the Purdue Boilermakers and he is in his sophomore season. Edwards is not the only player with that last name on the team, but he is not related to forward Vincent Edwards.

Carsen Edwards played over 23 minutes per game his freshman season and averaged over 10 points per contest as well. This season, he’s averaging over 29 minutes and 18 points per game.

Who is Carsen Edwards? 5 things to know

1. Carsen Edwards was ranked as the No. 25 point guard in the country coming out of high school

It may seem odd now because of how good Edwards is as just a sophomore, but according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, he was ranked as the No. 25 point guard in his class. He has proven to be much better than what he was ranked in his first two seasons in college.

This year, Edwards is averaging 18.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 47 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range.

2. Purdue was the only Big Ten team to offer Edwards a scholarship

Speaking of recruiting, according to 247Sports, Purdue was the only Big Ten team to offer him a scholarship. Teams within the state of Texas — where Edwards is from — like Baylor, Houston, Rice, Texas Tech and Texas all offered him scholarships.

Purdue, located near the middle of the country, decided to join in on the fun of trying to pursue him to campus. The Boilermakers made a good choice.

3. Carsen  Edwards made 13-of-15 3-pointers in a high school game

This statistic is just flat out impressive. It’s one thing to get hot, but it’s another to make 13-of-15 from 3-point range.

In a high school game his senior year, Edwards scored 50 points in a game in which he made 13-of-15 from deep. The 50 points marked a school record in a single game.

4. Carsen  Edwards had a historically great freshman season at Purdue

He wasn’t named Player of the Year or anything other-worldly, but Edwards was one of three freshmen in school history to finish with at least 360 points, 60 assists and 30 steals. He was also the only freshman in the conference to finish with at least 45 3-points and 35 steals.

Edwards also finished top-10 in school history among freshmen in points (360), scoring average (10.3), 3-pointers made (49), free throw percentage (.743) and steals (36).

5. Carsen  Edwards was named First-Team All-Big Ten as a sophomore

Again, the 6-foot-1 point guard from Humble, Texas has proven to be better than what people have expected of him. As a sophomore, he was named First-Team All-Big Ten.

Edwards was actually one of three sophomores named to the First-Team, alongside Michigan State’s Miles Bridges and Penn State’s Tony Carr.
