Ian Book is the backup quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, but he may receive a chance to start this Saturday with starting signal caller Brandon Wimbush dealing with a foot injury. Here are five things you need to know about Book.
Who is Ian Book? 5 things to know about the Notre Dame backup quarterback
1. He has limited experience in 4 games this year
Book managed one rushing attempt against both Georgia and Michigan State, but he received more opportunities at the end of blowouts versus Boston College and Miami (OH).
He was 0 for 3 passing against Boston College, but this past Saturday versus Miami (OH), Book went 3 for 5 with 51 yards, including a beautiful 48-yard pass to walk-on Chris Finke. Additionally, he rushed for 37 yards on 3 carries against the Red Hawks.
The only opponent Book didn’t play against this year was Temple.
2. Book played very well during the Blue and Gold Game
Coming into the spring, there were concerns about Notre Dame’s quarterback depth. If Wimbush went down with any type of injury, it was unknown who coach Brian Kelly would be able to turn to.
But Book quickly put any worry to rest. He completed 17 of 22 passes for 277 yards and a touchdown in the annual spring game. Book showed off his vertical passing ability, averaging more than 12.5 yards per attempt.
His two most impressive throws were a 58-yard bomb to Kevin Stepherson, most of which came before the catch, and a 37-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Sanders.
But the most encouraging part about the performance was his command of the offense. Even with just one season at Notre Dame, Book appeared to have a firm grasp of the playbook and offensive coordinator Chip Long’s terminology. He looked almost like a savvy veteran behind center.
That combined with his in-game action this year should put Notre Dame fan’s minds at ease just a little if he needs to start against North Carolina.
3. This is his sophomore season
Book didn’t play during his first year last season, but he is still considered a sophomore. Last year, he served as Notre Dame’s fourth-string quarterback and split time between the starters and the offensive scout team in practice.
One of the quarterbacks he was behind on the depth chart in 2016 was Montgomery Vangorder, but behind his strong spring game performance, Book has moved in front of Vangorder this season.
4. Book was ranked a 3-star quarterback in 2016 recruiting class
At 247Sports, he was rated the 20th-best pro-style quarterback and the 59th-best prospect in California as a 3-star player. 247Sports also ranked him the 526th overall player in the nation.
The highest rating he received from any of the recruiting websites was the No. 14 spot for pro-styled quarterbacks at Rivals. Book was also in the top 40 among pro-styled quarterbacks at Scout and ESPN.
5. Book is from El Dorado Hills, CA and went to Oak Ridge High School
The sophomore was a three-year starter behind center at Oak Ridge, helping his team to a pair of 10-win seasons in 2013 and 2015. He also led Oak Ridge to the Sac-Joaquin sectional semifinals twice.
As a senior, he posted incredible numbers, throwing for 3,049 yards, 30 touchdowns in 2015. And although he’s classified as a pocket passer, he does have the ability to run. During his senior year of high school, he also rushed for 779 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He also starred as a junior, passing for 2,025 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2014. In both of those seasons combined, Book threw 12 interceptions, only 5 of which came during his senior year.
Over his entire high school career, Book threw for 7,632 passing yards along with 78 touchdowns and posted a 64.6 completion percentage.
