Wisconsin-Michigan basketball preview

Wisconsin is coming off a 78-69 road victory against Illinois on Thursday night that snapped a string of five consecutive losses by the Badgers. Wisconsin’s only two victories since Jan. 2 have come against the Illini.

Illinois guard Trent Frazier buried a 3-pointer to tie the score at 52-52. But Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ connected on a jumper to give Wisconsin a 54-52 lead with 10:51 remaining in the second half, which sparked an 8-0 Badgers run to help seal the game.

Happ was tremendous in scoring a team-high 27 points to go with 8 assists and 6 rebounds. He made 12 of 20 field goals. He also received help from guard Brevin Pritzl (15 points) and guard Brad Davison (14 points). Pritzl snapped out of a major funk after he had missed all 13 of his field goal attempts over the previous two games, including 10 3-pointers. Against Illinois, he made all 3 of his 3-point tries.

The Big Ten Tournament began in 1998, which coincided with the last time Wisconsin missed the NCAA Tournament. That Badgers team entered the conference tournament as a No. 10 seed. Over the next 19 seasons, Wisconsin was never seeded worse than No. 6.

But as Wisconsin heads for the home stretch and its final five conference games, the Badgers find themselves in 10th place in league play. Minnesota (3-10), Iowa (3-10), Illinois (2-10) and Rutgers (2-11) are behind Wisconsin. The four worst teams, seeded from 11-14, play on the first day of the Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York on Feb. 28.

Wisconsin has a difficult closing run that includes games against three of the top four teams in the Big Ten: Michigan, Purdue and Michigan State. Wisconsin also plays Minnesota and Northwestern.

Michigan is 19-7 overall and 8-5 in the Big Ten. The Wolverines are coming off a 61-52 loss at Northwestern.

Michigan has three players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Moritz Wagner’s 14.4 points per game. Charles Matthews (14.0 points) and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (11.3 points) also are in double figures.
