Wisconsin-Northwestern basketball preview

Wisconsin is coming off a 73-63 come-from-behind overtime victory against Minnesota on Monday night. It marked the Badgers’ second consecutive win in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin trailed 58-51 on Jordan Murphy’s 3-pointer with 5:58 remaining in the second half, and appeared done. But Brevin Pritzl buried a 3-pointer and Khalil Iverson made a layup to cut the deficit to 58-56. Wisconsin had one final possession down 59-57 with 9.2 seconds remaining. Ethan Happ scored inside to forge a 59-59 tie with 5.3 seconds left and send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, it was all Wisconsin, with Pritzl connecting on a pair of huge 3s. The first occurred at the 4:13 mark of overtime and the second gave Wisconsin a 67-61 edge with 2:53 remaining.

Pritzl was sensational from long range in scoring a career-high 20 points. He made 6 of 9 3-point attempts and came up clutch down the stretch. Brad Davison tallied 19 points and made 5 3-pointers, including 4 in the first half. Happ was held scoreless in the first half, but finished with 10 points. Iverson scored 7 points and had 12 rebounds.

Wisconsin is still three games under .500 and likely will finish the season with a losing record for the first time in 20 years. But Wisconsin’s ability to persevere through a difficult season has to be encouraging as the Badgers build toward the future. Wisconsin defeated No. 6 Purdue on Thursday night and responded with a strong performance against border rival Minnesota.

If the Badgers peak at the right time, they could even make a run in the Big Ten Tournament. It’s a long shot, of course, but stranger things have happened. Wisconsin has played well enough to avoid playing on the first day of the Big Ten Tournament as one of the four worst seeds.

Davison, who is averaging 11.7 points per game, is in rare company as a double-digit scorer in his rookie campaign. Over the last 20 years, Devin Harris, Alando Tucker and Happ are the only Badgers to average double figures in points during their freshman seasons. But Davison has been forced to carry a heavy burden without injured guards D’Mitrik Trice and Kobe King. Davison also has been hampered by a left shoulder injury that limits his mobility.

Northwestern is coming off a 71-64 loss against Maryland on Monday. The Wildcats are 15-14 overall, including 6-10 in the Big Ten, and have lost four consecutive conference games.

Northwestern is led by Scottie Lindsey, who is averaging 14.3 points per game. Bryant McIntosh (12.1 points), Vic Law (12.0 points) and Dererk Pardon (11.4 points) also are scoring in double figures.

Northwestern defeated Wisconsin 60-52 at the Kohl Center on Feb. 1, after the Wildcats jumped out to an 18-1 lead.
