Wisconsin-Purdue series history
Wisconsin has dominated Purdue in recent years, winning 11 consecutive games dating to 2004. The Badgers have won the last 10 of those affairs by double digits.
Wisconsin’s last game against Purdue at Camp Randall Stadium was a 24-7 victory in 2015. Badgers quarterback Joel Stave threw for 322 yards, and Alec Ingold ran for 2 touchdowns. Wisconsin’s defense held Purdue to season lows for total offense (191 yards) and rushing offense (55 yards).
Last season, Wisconsin hammered Purdue 49-20 in West Lafayette. Badgers outside linebacker T.J. Watt returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown, which began a stretch in which Wisconsin scored 35 points in 8 1/2 minutes.
Wisconsin quarterbacks Bart Houston and Alex Hornibrook combined to complete 12 of 15 passes for 191 yards with 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Purdue quarterback David Blough completed 14 of 30 passes for 206 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
One of the most well-known games in the series took place in 1998, when Wisconsin defeated Purdue 31-24 in Madison. Boilermakers quarterback Drew Brees threw an NCAA-record 83 passes in the game, which dragged on during the second half. Between the third and fourth quarters, Wisconsin assistant marketing director Kevin Kluender blared House of Pain’s 1992 hit song “Jump Around” over the loudspeakers after intern Ryan Sondrup provided him with a playlist.
That moment became the basis for one of the greatest new traditions in college football. The song remains a staple at Camp Randall before every fourth quarter, and fans jump up and down to shake the stadium.
Purdue certainly appears to be a team on the rise under first-year coach Jeff Brohm. Purdue lost 35-28 against Louisville and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson in the season opener. The Boilermakers then responded with victories against Ohio and Missouri before battling to a tough 28-10 loss against Michigan.
Brohm has effectively used a quarterback rotation featuring Blough and Elijah Sindelar. The duo has combined this season to complete 87 of 144 passes (60.4 percent) for 995 yards with 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Blough has 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, which is a vast improvement over last season, when he threw 21 interceptions.
Wisconsin leads the all-time series against Purdue 47-29-8.
