Q&A with senior forward Chris Wright

Wright says he'll always come back to UD

I sat down with Chris Wright after UD’s great win over Duquesne last Saturday at UD Arena. Here are some highlights from the interview that I’ll use for an upcoming “Flyer Fastbreak” segment on the WHIO Bud Light Pregame Show.

Full name: Charles Christian Wright (everybody thinks my name is Christopher, but it’s Christian).

Who’s in your family? “A lot of people! My mom is Ernestine Grigsby, and I have five biological siblings, and my mom adopted other kids. My uncle, J.D. Grigsby is a big part of the family, too. Without your family and faith you don’t have anything. If you lose either of them, you’re in trouble.”

Nicknames: “C-Dub, C, C-Monster. I am the team clown, everybody knows that. I get in trouble in practice all the time for clowning around and making fun of the coaches, but I never joke when BG gives a pregame speech.”

What is the Chris Wright motto? “Always think and PUSH — Pray Until Something Happens. Things can be going wrong, but God is always listening. If you pray, he hears you and he knows you’re willing to do the things to be the right type of Christian. It doesn’t matter if things aren’t going your way, ’cause there’s always somebody who has it worse. So you have to stay positive. Being only 22, I’ve experienced a lot, to the point where it seemed you can’t get out of a bad situation, but it always ends up working out for the better.”

What do you want to do when your career as a Flyer is over? “I would love to play in the NBA and take everything I’ve learned from this team and community and share it. Someday I would like to start a fitness center for children, for the youth of America. The days of sitting down and reading books are over, because of all the technology. I would like to help them realize communication is important. Sometimes I find myself writing a paper and typing “u-r” instead of “your.” (laughs) I’m trying to text in the right way, instead of abbreviating because it starts to cross over and you don’t even realize it!

“Today’s world is full of texting, tweeting and Facebook, and you can use all the slang you want. But in the real world, you can’t do that.”

How do you prepare for a game? “I listen to ‘slow jams’ to calm me down, because sometimes I get over-hyped when I listen to fast music, so I just try to chill. I get here two hours before a game, get in the whirlpool and listen to music. I text my mom and my close friends and that’s the last time I’ll text until after the game. Then I get out there and try to do what I do best.”

What does being a Dayton Flyer mean to you? “It’s meant everything to me. It’s family, a home away from home. Once I’m gone, I’m gonna miss this place, but at the same time, I have to move on. I’ll always come back, I will be a Flyer forever.”

What’s your greatest memory as a Flyer? “Going to the NCAA. Hearing that CBS music on Selection Sunday. That was one of the greatest experiences of my life and I will never forget it.”

What would you like to say to the Flyer Faithful? “I love you. Thanks for supporting me all four years, even my freshman year when I got injured. Just continue to stick with me. I love this place. I will always be a Dayton Flyer and I guarantee I’m going to keep coming back wherever I go. I’m going to miss y’all and I love you.”

When you get to heaven, what would you like God to say? “Come on in and hug me. I hope He doesn’t turn around, ’cause if He does that, I’m gonna start hollering and crying! (laughs) I hope he says, ‘Well done, you did a good job and now you can stay with me forever!’ ”
