Collymore’s two-run double keys Dragons’ win

Malik Collymore’s two-run double broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and Dayton pitchers Andrew Jordan and Austin Orewiler combined to scatter 11 hits as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Cubs 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Dragons a split of the four-game set in South Bend and lifted their second-half record to 5-6.

South Bend took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, but the Dragons responded with two in the third to tie. J.D. Piatnik stole second and third, and scored on Jose Garcia’s single through the middle to make it 2-2.

The Dragons broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the sixth inning. Garcia lined a double to the fence in left to start the rally, and Montrell Marshall’s ground out to second base moved Garcia to third. Jeter Downs walked and stole second. After Leandro Santana struck out, Collymore lined a double to the left field fence to bring in Garcia and Downs and give the Dragons a 4-2 lead. Hendrik Clementina followed with a single to center field to score Collymore and make it 5-2.

Orewiler replaced Jordan to start the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Cubs scoreless the rest of the way to earn his second save. Orewiler allowed five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Jordan (2-3) earned the win. He worked five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
