The Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team dominated the fourth quarter against Colgate to avoid an upset in their season opener, winning 67-58 on Friday morning at UD Arena.

Approximately 7,500 kids from 43 local schools attended the game. They raised the decibel levels every time Colgate attempted a free throw and danced at every timeout.

The support had to help the Flyers, who trailed 47-43 after three quarters. Colgate finished 7-23 last season. It returned five starters but lost 80-61 at Yale in its opener.

Dayton trailed 51-48 early in the fourth quarter but took control with a 10-1 run.

Julia Chandler, playing her first game at Dayton after transferring from Syracuse, led the Flyers with 17 points. Lauren Cannatelli scored 13. Jayla Scaife scored 12.

Dayton struggled from 3-point range, making 2 of 19, and committed 16 turnovers.
